Wellness is not a luxury.
It is a necessity.
I have spent years sitting across from women who were running on empty — women who gave everything to everyone else and saved nothing for themselves. And I have lived that story too. So when I talk about wellness, I am not talking about spa days or green juice. I am talking about the real, unglamorous, non-negotiable work of keeping yourself whole.
Wellness, to me, is built on a few foundations that are too important to skip — and I want to name them plainly, the way I would with a dear friend sitting across from me at the kitchen table.
Access to Health Care
You need a place to land when you are not feeling well — a nurse practitioner, a doctor, a clinic. Your yearly checkups, your breast exam, your colon screening, your prostate exam. These are not optional. This is non-negotiable. Find your provider and keep your appointments.
Access to Healthy Food
Find a grocery store in your community that carries fresh fruits and vegetables. If money is an issue, find your local food bank — they will welcome you with open arms. Your body needs real nourishment. Feed it with intention and without shame.
Medicine Compliance
If your doctor has prescribed medication, take it as prescribed. This is an act of self-respect. Do not let busyness, cost concerns, or stigma stand between you and your wellbeing — speak to your provider if barriers arise.
20 Minutes Every Day — Just for You
Twenty minutes. Every single day. Not for your family, not for your job, not for your to-do list. For you. Your mental health depends on it. Walk, breathe, journal, pray, sit in silence — whatever restores you. Guard those twenty minutes like they are sacred. Because they are.
“Just like a garden, healing is not linear. Some days you plant, some days you water, some days you simply rest — and all of it matters.”
— The Garden Within · Nadine Thompson
How Are You Doing Today?
Take a moment. Breathe. This checklist is not a test — it is an invitation to check in with yourself honestly and gently, the way a good gardener checks on her plants each morning.
