Wellness is not a luxury.
It is a necessity.

I have spent years sitting across from women who were running on empty — women who gave everything to everyone else and saved nothing for themselves. And I have lived that story too. So when I talk about wellness, I am not talking about spa days or green juice. I am talking about the real, unglamorous, non-negotiable work of keeping yourself whole.

Wellness, to me, is built on a few foundations that are too important to skip — and I want to name them plainly, the way I would with a dear friend sitting across from me at the kitchen table.

01

Access to Health Care

You need a place to land when you are not feeling well — a nurse practitioner, a doctor, a clinic. Your yearly checkups, your breast exam, your colon screening, your prostate exam. These are not optional. This is non-negotiable. Find your provider and keep your appointments.

02

Access to Healthy Food

Find a grocery store in your community that carries fresh fruits and vegetables. If money is an issue, find your local food bank — they will welcome you with open arms. Your body needs real nourishment. Feed it with intention and without shame.

03

Medicine Compliance

If your doctor has prescribed medication, take it as prescribed. This is an act of self-respect. Do not let busyness, cost concerns, or stigma stand between you and your wellbeing — speak to your provider if barriers arise.

04

20 Minutes Every Day — Just for You

Twenty minutes. Every single day. Not for your family, not for your job, not for your to-do list. For you. Your mental health depends on it. Walk, breathe, journal, pray, sit in silence — whatever restores you. Guard those twenty minutes like they are sacred. Because they are.

“Just like a garden, healing is not linear. Some days you plant, some days you water, some days you simply rest — and all of it matters.”

— The Garden Within · Nadine Thompson

How Are You Doing Today?

Take a moment. Breathe. This checklist is not a test — it is an invitation to check in with yourself honestly and gently, the way a good gardener checks on her plants each morning.

🌱 Your Emotional Garden Today

Over the past two weeks, have you felt nervous, anxious, or on edge?If yes — how intense has that feeling been? Has it been getting in the way of your daily life?
It is okay to name it. Anxiety is a signal, not a verdict. What does your anxiety most need from you today — action, rest, or connection?
Over the past two weeks, have you felt down, hopeless, or had little interest in things you usually enjoy?
Low mood visits all of us. If it has been more than two weeks, please reach out to a mental health professional or your doctor. You deserve support.
How would you describe the weather in your inner garden today?
Sunny and open? Overcast and heavy? Stormy? There is no wrong answer — just notice. What does your inner weather tell you about what you need today?
Have you felt easily irritated, restless, or unable to sit still today?
Sometimes what looks like irritability is exhaustion in disguise. What might be underneath your restlessness right now?

☀️ Your Energy & Rest

How is your energy today? Did you sleep well last night?Do you feel rested and ready, or are you running on fumes?
If energized — what would you like to do with that energy today? If depleted — could you rest this evening, get to bed earlier, or carve out 20 minutes of quiet?
Have you given yourself your 20 minutes today?Your 20 minutes just for you — not for anyone else, not for a task. For your own restoration.
If not yet — when today will you take them? Put it in your calendar right now as a non-negotiable appointment with yourself.
Are you in a season of drought or a season of bloom?
A garden in drought is not a failed garden — it is a garden that needs water. What is one small, sustainable source of nourishment you could bring to yourself today?

🌿 Your Physical Garden

Have you taken your medications today — exactly as prescribed?
Medicine compliance is an act of self-respect and self-love. If cost or access is a barrier, please speak with your provider or pharmacist today.
Have you nourished your body with good food today?
If access to fresh food is a challenge, your local food bank is there for you without judgment. Finding nourishment is wisdom, not weakness.
Is there a health appointment you have been putting off?
Schedule it today. Your body is the garden where your whole life grows. Tend it with the same care you give everything else.

🤝 Your Community Garden

Have you felt connected to someone you love or trust this week?
Who in your life is your companion plant — the person whose presence genuinely helps you thrive? Have you been in touch with them lately?
Is there something you have been carrying alone that you could share with someone safe today?
You were not designed to carry everything by yourself. Asking for support is not a burden — it is an invitation to connection.
A gentle reminder from Nadine —This checklist is a starting place, not a diagnosis. If you are consistently struggling, please reach out to a mental health professional or your primary care provider. If you are in crisis, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) at any time. You are not alone.
